Prince Heinrich XV. Reuss zu Greiz (born February 22, 1751 in Greiz ; † August 30, 1825 there ) was an Austrian field marshal .

Life

Henry XV. was a younger son of Prince Heinrich XI. Reuss zu Greiz and his first wife, Countess Konradine Reuss zu Köstritz.

Prince Henry XV also carried the title of prince, although his older brother Heinrich XIII. ruling Prince Reuss zu Greiz was. This fact can be explained by the fact that when his father was raised to the rank of imperial prince, he was honored that all of his male descendants were allowed to accept the title of prince.

Heinrich entered the Austrian service, was adjutant general to Emperor Joseph II in 1787 and then increasingly entrusted with military tasks. The prince distinguished himself in Flanders in 1793 and was promoted to major general on May 29 for his services in the First Coalition War . He was appointed adjutant to Field Marshal Prince von Sachsen-Coburg-Saalfeld and took part in the siege of Maubeuge fortress . In 1796 the prince took over a brigade of the Austrian army on the Upper Rhine and was assigned to the corps under Field Marshal Lieutenant Davidovich , which marched to Italy to try to relieve the besieged Mantua .

On September 4, 1796 his troops were attacked by Massena near Rovereto and thrown back, Trento was lost to the French. On January 14 and 15, 1797 he took part in the Battle of Rivoli under Alvinzy and was promoted to Lieutenant Field Marshal on March 1, 1797 . After the defeat in Italy, he led his division back to Laibach on an eastern route via Gradiska and Gorizia in March 1797 .

In 1799 FML Reuss fought under Archduke Karl in Swabia, his troops fought on March 25th near Stockach and on May 27th near Winterthur . On June 4, 1799, he fought in the Battle of Zurich , where he stood in the center of Austria and repulsed repeated attacks by the French under Oudinot . Despite the following Austrian defeats in southern Germany, he managed to keep the enemy out of Tyrol in 1800. In 1801, the emperor appointed him colonel owner of Infantry Regiment No. 17.

In the campaign of 1805 , Prince Reuss led his division back to Italy, under Archduke Karl his troops fought in the Battle of Caldiero on October 30th .

In the campaign of 1809 he first commanded a division in the 5th Corps under the command of Archduke Ludwig . After participating in the fighting near Landshut , the battle near Neumarkt (April 24th) and the battle near Ebelsberg (May 3rd), he was promoted to Feldzeugmeister . At the beginning of July 1809 during the Battle of Wagram he was himself the commander of the 5th Corps, which was posted as a reserve northeast of Vienna near Bisamberg . His troops were not directly involved in the battle, but made a significant contribution to the orderly Austrian withdrawal. In the Battle of Znojmo on July 11, 1809, his corps was the main defense against Marshal Masséna . Archduke Karl awarded him the Knight's Cross of the Maria Theresa Order .

Together with Carl Philipp von Wrede , he was involved in the Ried Treaty in 1813 , which sealed Bavaria's detachment from the Rhine Confederation , which is why Emperor Franz I awarded him the Grand Cross of the Leopold Order .

Henry XV. became the first Governor General of Venice on April 20, 1814 , after it fell to Austria in 1814, and later General Commander in Galicia . After retiring into private life in 1824, Emperor Franz appointed him Field Marshal on September 10, 1824 . He died unmarried in Greiz a year later.
