Hugh Mackay, 14th Lord Reay
Hugh William Mackay, 14th Lord Reay (born July 19, 1937 - May 10, 2013 ) was a British politician ( Conservative Party ), member of the House of Lords and member of the European Parliament .
Life
Lord Reay was the only son of Æneas Alexander Mackay, 13th Lord Reay .
He attended Eton College and studied at Christ Church College of Oxford University .
When his father died in March 1963, he inherited the chief dignity of Clan MacKay , as well as its title of nobility as 14th Lord Reay , with the subordinate title of 14th Baronet , of Far, and the Dutch title (6th) Baron Mackay van Ophemert en Zennewijnen . Membership in the House of Lords was associated with the lord title from the entry into force of the Peerage Act 1963 in August 1963. From 1973 to 1979 he was a member of the European Parliament (at that time the members were still elected by the national parliaments).
In 1991, Prime Minister John Major appointed him Parliamentary Undersecretary to the Department of Commerce and Industry . After the general election in 1992 , he resigned from the ministry. With the passage of the House of Lords Act 1999 , he lost the automatic seat in the House of Lords, along with all the other hereditary peers. However, he was elected as one of the 92 elected Hereditary Peers to remain in the House after the reform.
Marriages and offspring
His first marriage was the Hon. Annabel Thérèse Fraser, daughter of Simon Fraser, 15th Lord Lovat , in 1964 . The marriage ended in divorce in 1978 (his ex-wife married Sir Henry Keswick , CEO of Jardine Matheson Holdings , in 1985 ). The first marriage resulted in two sons and a daughter:
- Æneas Simon Mackay, 15. Lord Reay (* 1965), bank manager, ⚭ Mia Ruulio;
- Hon. Laura Elizabeth Mackay (* 1966)
- Hon. Edward Andrew Mackay (* 1974)
His second marriage in 1980 was the Hon.Victoria Isabella Warrender, the youngest daughter of John Warrender, 2nd Baron Bruntisfield , with whom he had two daughters:
- Hon. Antonia Alexandria Mackay (* 1981);
- Hon. Isabel Violet Grace Mackay (* 1985).
When he died in 2013, his son Æneas inherited his title of nobility.
