Antonio Tosti (born October 4, 1776 in Rome , † March 20, 1866 there ) was an Italian cardinal to the Curia .

Life

Tommaso Tosti's son studied civil and canon law at the Collegio Romano and then received the sacrament of ordination. Cardinal Joachim-Jean-Xavier d'Isoard appointed Tosti as his Aiutante di Studio . Pope Pius VII sent Tosti to Turin in 1822. When he returned at the end of 1828, he worked at the Apostolic Chamber and in 1829 received from Leo XII. bestowed the title of papal house prelate. Under Pius VIII he became consultor of the Congregation of Rites in June 1829 . From 1830 to 1839 he was President of the San Michele a Ripa Grande Hospital in Rome.

His reputation as a financial expert brought Tosti a promotion to the curia . In 1834 he became papal treasurer general, on February 12, 1838 he was appointed by Pope Gregory XVI. in pectore in the College of Cardinals received. On February 18, 1839, Tosti's creation was announced and he was appointed cardinal priest of San Pietro in Montorio . Despite his experience as a treasurer, he could not prevent the Pope's expenses from rising more and more, as Gregory XVI. several times asked European states for weapons aid. He took part after Gregory's death in the conclave of 1846 , in which Pius IX. was chosen. As the longest serving cardinal priest, he was cardinal proto-priest from 1863. In 1859 Cardinal Tosti also became treasurer of the College of Cardinals, which he remained for a year. From 1860 until his death in 1866 he was papal librarian.
