Giovanni Francesco Stoppani

Giovanni Francesco Stoppani (born September 16, 1695 in Milan , † November 18, 1774 in Rome ; also listed as Gianfrancesco Stoppani ) was a papal diplomat, cardinal of the Roman Church and bishop of the suburbicarian diocese of Palestrina .

Life

Early years

Giovanni Francesco Stoppani came from a noble family, he was the youngest of five children of the Marquis Giovanni Francesco Stoppani and Laura Croce . He received his first education from private tutors, later he attended the Collegio Borromeo in Milan. He studied at the Pontifical Academy for the Ecclesiastical Nobility in 1714 and completed his studies at the University of Pavia on November 10, 1716 with the degree of Doctor iuris utriusque . He had already received the tonsure on June 24, 1715 .

Church career

He entered the Apostolic Signature on June 30, 1724 as a trainee lawyer . Pope Innocent XIII awarded him the title of House Prelate of His Holiness . From November 19, 1730 to 1736 he was Inquisitor General on the island of Malta .

Giovanni Francesco Stoppani received the minor ordinations on June 14, 1734 , he was ordained subdeacon on July 19, 1734 and was ordained deacon on July 25, 1734 . He was ordained a priest on August 1, 1734.

Pope Clement XII. appointed him on March 14, 1735 titular Archbishop of Corinto . He was ordained bishop on March 25, 1735 by Cardinal Giorgio Spinola with the assistance of Archbishop Antonio Maria Pallavicini and Curia Bishop Carlo Alberto Guidobono Cavalchini .

Giovanni Francesco Stoppani became nuncio in Florence on April 13, 1735 . On March 10, 1739 he moved to the Nunciature in Venice . As Nuncio extraordinary he went to the imperial court on November 12, 1743 and to Frankfurt am Main for election on March 16, 1745 . He returned to Rome and remained there for two years without benefiting. On January 26, 1747 he was appointed President of Urbino , which he held until 1754.

In the consistory of November 26, 1753 Pope rose Benedict XIV. Him cardinal, on May 20, 1754 Giovanni Francesco Stoppani became the cardinal priests , the titular church of San Martino ai Monti . From May 20, 1754, he was legate in Urbino, from September 20, 1756, then legate in Romagna and remained this until October 27, 1761.

He took part in the conclave in 1758, from which Clemens XIII. emerged as Pope. On July 10, 1763 Giovanni Francesco Stoppani opted for the class of cardinal bishops and the suburbicarian diocese of Palestrina . At the conclave in 1769 , the Clement XIV. Chose as pope, he also took part.

Giovanni Francesco Stoppani died on November 18, 1774 in Rome during the conclave 1774–1775 during the period of the Sedis vacancy of kidney disease after receiving the sacraments . His body was laid out in the church of San Andrea della Valle , where the funeral service also took place. He found his final resting place in this very church, in a tomb which he himself had erected and which is provided with his bust and a simple inscription.
