Antonio Eugenio Visconti (born June 17, 1713 in Milan , † March 4, 1788 in Rome ) was a cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

At the age of 20 he began to study law in Pavia and received his doctorate in both rights in 1737 . From 1740 he worked at the Roman Curia . On December 22, 1759 he received from Pope Clement XIII. personally ordained a priest . On January 28, 1760 he was named titular archbishop of Ephesus . the episcopal consecration donated to him on February 16, 1760 again Clemens XIII .; Co- consecrators were Filippo Caucci , Latin Patriarch of Constantinople , and Giuseppe Locatelli , Titular Archbishop of Cartagine ( Carthage ). As a member of the Roman Curia, Visconti became nuncio in Poland on February 22, 1760 . In this capacity, he gave speeches to the Diet in Warsaw on September 3, 1764 and November 12, 1766 , with which he went down in the history of Poland . On November 22, 1766 he became nuncio in Austria .

He was appointed cardinal by Pope Clement XIV on June 17, 1771 in pectore , the appointment being published on April 14, 1773 after his resignation as nuncio. He was assigned the titular church of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme . In May 1774 he became Commander Abbot of San Giovanni in Vertemate in Como . Visconti took part in the conclave of 1774/1775 , the Pope Pius VI. chose. From 1780 to 1781 he was treasurer of the Holy College of Cardinals . In 1782 Pius VI appointed him. as Prefect of the Congregation for Indulgences and Relics .
