Benedetto Lomellini (* 1517 in Genoa , † July 24, 1579 in Rome ) was a cardinal of the Roman Church .

biography

Lomellini came from a noble and wealthy family. His parents were David Lomellini and Bianca Centurione. Benedetto first practiced as a lawyer, then became a cleric of the Archdiocese of Genoa . This was followed by positions at the Roman Curia , a. a. as trainee lawyer for the Apostolic Signature and the Apostolic Penitentiary . The Dr. jur. he acquired in Rome. In 1551 Lomellini became papal house prelate , in July 1562 cleric of the Apostolic Chamber , in November 1562 prefect of the Annonae . In December 1557 he accompanied Cardinal Carlo Carafa on his legation trip to see King Philip II of Spain in Flanders.

Lomellini, who came from the same sex as Cardinal Giangirolamo Lomellini , was elevated to cardinal by Pope Pius IV on March 12, 1565 . In the middle of May of the same year, when he received the cardinal's hat, he was appointed cardinal deacon of Santa Maria in Aquiro and was made bishop of Ventimiglia in July 1565 , but moved to the seat of Luni-Sarzana a few months later . In September of the same year he was raised to cardinal priest of Santa Sabina at his request . Cardinal Clemente Dolera donated him the episcopal ordination on November 21, 1565 . Shortly afterwards he took part in the conclave of 1565/1566 , from which Pius V emerged as the new Pope. In 1571 Cardinal Lomellini was a legate. In 1572 he was transferred to the bishopric of Anagni and took part in the conclave of the same year , which Gregory XIII. elected to the Pope.
