Giovanni Carlo Boschi (born April 9, 1715 in Faenza , † September 6, 1788 in Rome ) was a cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

Giovanni Carlo Boschi, son of a noble patrician family, studied civil and canon law in Faenza and Rome. In 1740 he published De apostolica B. Petri cathedra and In funere Caroli VI Romanurum regis . In 1744 he was canon of the Vatican Basilica , in 1745 he received minor orders. Boschi was ordained a priest on March 5, 1746 . First he was a consultant at the Apostolic Signature before Pope Benedict XIV appointed him Prefect of the Apostolic Chamber in 1754 . In the following years he received from Benedict XIV. And his successor Clemens XIII. bestowed several titles and in 1759 became Prefect of the Apostolic Palace.

On September 22, 1760 he was appointed titular archbishop of Athenae . The episcopal ordination donated him on October 5th of the same year Pope Clement XIII. himself. Co- consecrators were Lodovico Calini , Patriarch of Antioch, and the later Cardinal Giovanni Antonio Bufalini . In the same year he became papal assistant to the throne .

In the consistory of July 21, 1766, Clemens XIII took him. as cardinal priest of Santi Giovanni e Paolo in the college of cardinals . He became a member of several cardinal congregations and in 1767 protector of the Holy Land. In the same year, Clemens XIII appointed him. to the cardinal major penitentiary , which he remained until his death. Cardinal Boschi took part in the conclave of 1769 , which Clement XIV elected.

During this time the Jesuit question preoccupied the church. Under pressure from several European powers, Clement XIV revoked the order on August 16, 1773. Boschi was on the side of the Jesuit order, which is why the Bourbon rulers vetoed his election as Pope in 1774, before the conclave that took place in the same year . On behalf of the new Pope Pius VI. In 1778 he censored the catechisms of Vienna and Milan because they deviated too much from the Roman catechism . In 1784 he was assigned the titular church of San Lorenzo in Lucina . Cardinal Boschi died four years later and was buried in his titular church. Vincenzo Zucchini published a chronicle of the funeral mass in Faenza in 1788.
