Andreas Franz Frühwirth
Andreas Franz Cardinal Frühwirth OP (born August 21, 1845 in Sankt Anna am Aigen , Austria as Franz Frühwirth ; † February 9, 1933 in Rome ) was a cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church .
Life
Franz Frühwirth entered the Dominican order on September 13, 1863 and took the name of the order Andreas . On July 5, 1868 he received in Graz the priesthood . He studied Catholic theology and philosophy in various Dominican houses , later he also studied at the Pontifical Academy of St. Thomas Aquinas .
He taught from 1871 to 1876 in the Ordenshaus in Graz and from 1885 to 1890 in Vienna . From 1890 he was Provincial of the Austro-Hungarian Order Province. In 1891 he became magister general of the entire order. In this capacity he also became consultor to the Holy Office . On 26 October 1907 he was Pope Pius X to the apostolic visitor of Austria and Apostolic Nuncio of Bavaria appointed. On November 30, 1907, he was ordained titular archbishop of Heraclea in Europe . He received his episcopal ordination from the then President of the Pontifical Commission for the Coordination of Welfare Issues, Cardinal Rafael Merry del Val ; Co-consecrators were Archbishop Diomede Panici , secretary of the Congregation for Rites , and Giuseppe Cecchini OP, prelate of the territorial prelature Altamura ed Acquaviva delle Fonti .
Frühwirth was by Pope Benedict XV. on December 6, 1915 to Cardinal Priest with the pro hac vice to title Church gathered Title Diakonie Santi Cosma e Damiano appointed. Since 1917 he lived in Rome and took part in the 1922 conclave , which Pope Pius XI. chose.
He was appointed cardinal major penitentiary on January 8, 1925 and held this office until December 9, 1927. Pope Pius XI appointed him Chancellor of the Holy Roman Church and Cardinal Priest with the titular Church of San Lorenzo in Damaso .
Andreas Cardinal Frühwirth died in Rome in 1933 as the oldest member of the College of Cardinals and was buried in the parish church of his hometown Sankt Anna am Aigen.
