Pietro Cardinal Maffi (born October 12, 1858 in Corteolona , Province of Pavia , Italy , † March 17, 1931 in Pisa ) was Archbishop of Pisa .

Life

Pietro Maffi received his philosophical and theological training in the seminary of Pavia . He completed his studies with a doctorate to the doctor of theology , and in 1881 received the sacrament of Holy Orders . He then worked as a lecturer for the subjects of systematic philosophy and natural sciences at the seminary of Pavia. He founded a museum of natural history and a meteorological observatory in Pavia . In addition, he published a journal for physics and mathematics for many years. In 1901 he was appointed prosynodal examinator and became an associate member of the Scientific Academy of Parma .

On June 9, 1902, Pope Leo XIII appointed him . the titular bishop of Caesarea in Mauretania and auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Ravenna . The episcopal ordination received Pietro Maffi two days later by Lucido Maria Cardinal Parocchi in the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls . Just a year later, Pietro Maffi became Archbishop of Pisa. In 1904 the Pope appointed him director and administrator of the Vatican Observatory . In the consistory of April 15, 1907, Pope Pius X accepted him as a cardinal priest with the titular church of San Crisogono in the college of cardinals . Pietro Maffi took part in the conclave in 1914 and 1922 . In 1930 he led the wedding party of the Italian Crown Prince Umberto with Princess Marie José of Belgium . Pietro Maffi died on March 17, 1931 in Pisa and was buried in the local cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta .
