Cardinal Agostino Richelmy (born November 29, 1850 in Turin ; † August 10, 1923 there ) was a cardinal of the Roman Church . From 1897 until his death he was Archbishop of Turin

Life

Agostino Richelmy was the son of the engineer Prospero Richelmy and his wife Lydia Realis. As a youth he joined the Garibaldi movement in the so-called Third War of Independence , and later as a priest he wore the characteristic red shirt under his cassock . Richelmy finally enrolled in the seminary of Turin and received on 25 April 1873, the priestly ordination . In 1876 he received his doctorate in theology. He was a professor of dogmatic theology and moral theology at the Turin seminary.

On June 7, 1886 he was by Pope Leo XIII. appointed Bishop of Ivrea . He received his episcopal ordination on October 28, 1886 in the Church of San Carlo by the Archbishop of Turin, Cardinal Gaetano Alimonda ; Co- consecrators were Davide Riccardi , Bishop of Novara , and Giovanni Battista Bertagna , Auxiliary Bishop in Turin.

On September 18, 1897 he was by Leo XIII. appointed archbishop of his home diocese of Turin. During his tenure, the Turin Shroud was exhibited in 1898, when it was first photographed. He held this office until 1923. In 1903 he founded the magazine Il momento .

In the consistory of June 18, 1899 he was by Pope Leo XIII. created a cardinal. He received the titular church of Sant'Eusebio on June 22, 1899 ; on November 27, 1911 he moved to the titular church of Santa Maria in Via . During the First World War , Cardinal Richelmy engaged numerous priests as military chaplains. He also promoted the work of the Catholic Action in Piedmont . He took part in the conclave in 1903 , 1914 and 1922, respectively .

Agostino Richelmy died in Turin after kidney operation. He was first buried in a cemetery in Turin; in 1927 his bones were transferred to the Santuario della Consolata in Turin.
