Giuseppe Cardinal Gamba (born April 25, 1857 in San Damiano d'Asti , Asti Province , Italy , † December 26, 1929 in Turin ) was Archbishop of Turin and previously Bishop of Novara .

Life

Giuseppe Gamba received his philosophical and theological training in the seminary of Asti . He received on 18 September 1880, the sacrament of the priesthood and worked as a chaplain and in the diocesan administration of the diocese of Asti. In 1889 he was secretary of the National Catechetical Congress in Piacenza . Gamba played a key role in the preparation of the diocesan synod of 1896. From 1898 he was vicar general of the diocese of Asti.

On December 16, 1901, Pope Leo XIII appointed him . to the Bishop of Biella. He was ordained bishop on February 23, 1902, by the then Bishop of Asti, Giacinto Arcangeli . On August 13, 1906, Pope Pius X appointed him Bishop of Novara . Gamba was involved in social issues in both dioceses and especially campaigned for workers' rights. After the end of the First World War in 1918, he supported the establishment of trade unions. He also promoted lay Catholics and was appointed Papal Assistant to the Throne in July 1917 .

Pope Pius XI On December 20, 1923, he transferred the leadership of the Archdiocese of Turin and three years later, on December 20, 1926, accepted him as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva in the College of Cardinals . In his first years he also supported the Catholic trade union movement, but was no longer able to make it public from 1925 onwards due to the political situation. In October 1927 he took part in the Piedmont Regional Council as a papal legate . Because of his commitment to the Catholic youth, Cardinal Gamba was known as Cardinale di Giovani .

Giuseppe Gamba died on December 26, 1929 while preparing for a diocesan synod and was buried in Turin Cathedral.
