Gaetano Alimonda (born October 23, 1818 in Genoa , Italy , † May 30, 1891 in Albaro , Liguria ) was Archbishop of Turin and Cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

Born the son of a grain merchant, Gaetano Alimonda studied at the University of Genoa , where he obtained a doctorate in law. On 17 December 1842 he was appointed sub-deacon ordained and received on 11 March 1843, the diaconate . After his ordination on June 10 of the same year he worked as a professor at the seminary in Genoa, of which he was rector for many years from 1854. In 1866 he became canon and member of the Metropolitan Chapter. The Pope gave him the title of House Prelate of His Holiness . During the Risorgimento , Gaetano Alimonda wrote for several Catholic newspapers and fought against liberalism and the unification of Italy in his articles.

On September 21, 1877, Gaetano Alimonda was appointed Bishop of Albenga . He was ordained bishop on November 11th of the same year in the Cathedral of Genoa by the Archbishop of Genoa , Salvatore Magnasco ; Co- consecrators were Giovanni Baptista Cerruti , Bishop of Savona e Noli , and Tommaso Reggio , Coadjutor of Ventimiglia . His episcopal motto was Mundo Corde .

Pope Leo XIII. elevated him to cardinal priest in the consistory on May 18, 1879 and awarded him the titular church of Santa Maria in Traspontina on September 22, 1879 . He resigned himself to his episcopate and became cardinal to the curia . He was Archbishop of Turin from August 9, 1883 until his death.

He died of liver disease and was buried in Turin.
