Aleksander Cardinal Kakowski (born February 5, 1862 in Dębiny , Mazovia , Poland , † December 30, 1938 in Warsaw ) was Archbishop of Warsaw .

Life

Aleksander Kakowski came from a noble landowning family. He studied at the University of Warsaw , in Saint Petersburg and Rome trays Catholic theology and philosophy . After receiving his doctorate in Catholic theology and canon law , he received the sacrament of ordination on May 30, 1886 . From 1886 to 1911 he performed various tasks in the Archdiocese of Warsaw, first as a parish priest , then as a canon lawyer for the diocesan curia . In addition, he headed the seminary for three years and was the censor for religious books. From 1910 to 1913 he headed the Ecclesiastical College in Saint Petersburg and taught canon law. In 1911 he was given the honorary title of papal house prelate .

1913 Pope named him Pius X to the Archbishop of Warsaw . The episcopal consecration donated to him on June 22, 1913 in Saint Petersburg Stanisław Casimir Zdzitowiecki , Bishop of Włocławek , co- consecrators were Jan Cieplak , Auxiliary Bishop in the Archdiocese of Mohilev , and Longin Zarnowiecki , Auxiliary Bishop in the Diocese of Lutsk, Zhytomyr and Kamennyets . Aleksander Kakowski's episcopal motto was: Operare sperare (" Hope in action").

In 1917 and 1918 Aleksander Kakowski was one of the three members of the Regency Council of the Regency Kingdom of Poland and from 1916 titular Primate of the Kingdom of Poland. Pope Benedict XV accepted him in 1919 as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Sant'Agostino in the college of cardinals . In 1935, Cardinal Kakowski directed the funeral for Marshal Piłsudski . In early 1938 he was elected Chancellor of the Chapter of the Order of the White Eagle .

Aleksander Kakowski was buried in the Bródno cemetery in Warsaw .
