Giuseppe Francica-Nava de Bontifè
Giuseppe Cardinal Francica-Nava, Baron de Bontifè (born July 23, 1846 in Catania , Sicily ; † December 7, 1928 there ) was papal diplomat and archbishop of Catania .
Life
The son of a noble family received the sacrament of Confirmation from his uncle Giovanni Battista Guttadauro di Reburdone at the age of twelve . Then Francica-Nava continued his studies. In 1869 he received minor orders and the ordination of deacons from his uncle . He also donated the sacrament of ordination to the nephew on May 22nd of the same year . Francica-Nava was then professor of theology in Caltanissetta , where he had also studied. In 1879 he became rector of the seminary there and received from Pope Leo XIII. bestowed the title of Pontifical House Prelate . He made a point of bringing the catechism to younger generations.
On August 9, 1883, Giuseppe Francica-Nava became auxiliary bishop in the diocese of Caltanissetta . He was ordained bishop on October 21 of the same year by his uncle Giovanni Battista Guttadauro, who was now Bishop of Caltanissetta. Co-consecrators were the bishops Giovanni and Gaetano Blandini . Six years later he became apostolic nuncio in Belgium before the Pope appointed him archbishop of his hometown in March 1895. In 1896 he was nuncio in Spain . On June 19, 1899, Leo XIII took. him as cardinal priest of the titular church Santi Giovanni e Paolo in the college of cardinals . Four years later, after Leo's death, Cardinal Francica-Nava attended the conclave of 1903 . He also participated in the conclaves of 1914 and 1922 in part. In 1918 he held a major synod in Catania , where 38 decrees were passed. In 1924 he became the longest serving cardinal priest cardinal protopriester .
Cardinal Giuseppe Francica-Nava died six years after the election of Pius XI. at the age of 82. Many Sicilian bishops were present at his funeral, including his successor Emilio Ferrais and Giovanni Jacono , Bishop of Caltanissetta. Francica-Nava's grave is in the chapel of St. Agatha in the cathedral of Catania.
Positions
Cardinal Francica-Nava was like Pope Leo XIII. liberal when it comes to social issues. Still, he was not a proponent of democracy. He attached particular importance to the catechism of Thomas Aquinas . He also held a Eucharistic Congress in his episcopal city of Catania in 1905.
