His Beatitude Grégoire-Pierre XV. Cardinal Agagianian ( Armenian Գրիգոր Պետրոս ԺԵ Աղաճանեան Krikor Bedros Aghajanian ; born September 18, 1895 in Akhaltsikhe , today in Georgia ; † May 16, 1971 in Rome ) was the fifteenth Patriarch of Cilicia of the Armenian Catholic Church and Curial Cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

Agagianian's baptismal name was Gazaros or Lazarus . He completed his studies in the seminary in Tbilisi and at the Pontifical University Urbaniana De Propaganda Fide in Rome .

He was ordained a priest on December 23, 1917 . From 1918 to 1921 he worked as a pastor in Tbilisi before becoming a member and vice-rector of the Pontifical Armenian College in Rome from 1921 to 1932 . It was there that he was rector between 1932 and 1937 . On August 5, 1932, he became the Privy Chamberlain of His Holiness Pope Pius XI. In 1935 he was Apostolic Visitator of the Armenian Catholic Patriarchal Institute in Bzommar near Beirut (Lebanon).

On July 11, 1935, Pope Pius XI appointed him titular bishop of Comana Armeniae . The episcopal ordination took place on July 21st by Archbishop Sergios Der Abrahamian , the Armenian auxiliary bishop in Rome; Co-consecrators were Archbishop Bartolomeo Cattaneo , Treasurer of the Apostolic Chamber , and Archbishop Pietro Pisani , Delegate of the Oriental Churches in Rome. His episcopal motto was Iustitia et Pax ("Justice and Peace"). On November 30, 1937, Agagianian was elected Armenian Patriarch of Cilicia by the Holy Synod of the Armenian Catholic Church. This election was confirmed by the Holy See on December 13th .

On February 18, 1946, Pope Pius XII took Agagianian as a cardinal priest with the titular church of San Bartolomeo all'Isola in the college of cardinals . On July 2, 1955, the Pope appointed him President of the Commission for the Revision of the Code for the Oriental Churches ( Codex Canonum Ecclesiarum Orientalium ). He was appointed Pro-Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples on June 18, 1958 , of which Agagianian was appointed Prefect on July 18, 1960 by Pope John XXIII. was raised.

In the conclave of 1958 it was traded as papabile . He was considered a candidate of the conservative faction of the College of Cardinals and, as it is said, was just under the ultimately elected John XXIII.

Agagianian took part as papal legate at the Marian Congress on January 31, 1959 in Saigon and at the congress in honor of the 1500th anniversary of the death of Saint Patrick , patron saint of Ireland , from June 15 to 23, 1961 in Dublin . At the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965) he worked as one of the four council moderators and had a considerable share in the mission scheme. He resigned from his post as the Armenian Catholic Patriarch of Cilicia on August 25, 1962 and took part in the 1963 conclave . In 1967 and 1969 he took part in the Synods of Bishops in the Vatican. He resigned from his post as Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples on October 19, 1970. Pope Paul VI elevated him to Cardinal Bishop of Albano on October 22, 1970 .

Grégoire-Pierre XV. Cardinal Agagianian died on May 16, 1971 in Rome and was buried there in the Armenian Church of San Nicola da Tolentino .
