Elia Angelo Cardinal Dalla Costa (born May 14, 1872 in Villaverla , Vicenza Province , Italy , † December 22, 1961 in Florence ) was Archbishop of Florence .

Life

Elia Dalla Costa was born in Villaverla to Luigi Dalla Costa and his wife Teresa Dal Balcon. The youngest of the five children was baptized by Angelo Rossi on June 23, 1872 with Francesco di Muraro Bressanvido and Eugenia Dalla Costa as his godparents. Costa attended the seminar in Vicenza and Padua before July 25, 1895 by Bishop of Vicenza , Antonio Feruglio , the ordination received. He finished his studies in 1897 and then worked in Vicenza, where he also taught in the seminary, as a pastor .

On May 25, 1923, Dalla Costa was founded by Pope Pius XI. appointed Bishop of Padua . The episcopal ordination received his Bishop Ferdinando Rodolfi on 12 August of the same year in the Cathedral of Vicenza ; Co-consecrators were the Bishop of Treviso , Andrea Longhin OFMCap , and the Bishop of Ascoli Piceno , Apollonio Maggio . On December 19, 1931 he was from Pius XI. appointed Archbishop of Florence. He headed the diocese of Padua from January to May 1932 as Apostolic Administrator .

Pope Pius XI accepted Dalla Costa on March 13, 1933 as a cardinal priest with the titular church of San Marco in the college of cardinals . He was one of the participating cardinals in the 1939 conclave (in which he received votes) that Pope Pius XII. elected and later in the conclave of 1958 , the Johannes XXIII. chose.

During World War II he became known as the "Cardinal of Mercy" for helping save thousands of Italians from execution by the fascist regime. For his actions to save Italian Jews during World War II, he was named Righteous Among the Nations by the Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial Center in 2012 .

Dalla Costa died of lung complications in Florence at the age of 89 and was buried in Florence's Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral.

Beatification process

On December 22, 1981, exactly 20 years after his death, the process of his beatification was opened. Pope Francis awarded him the heroic degree of virtue on May 4, 2017 .

  • Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli was a friend of Cardinal Dalla Costa and shared the positions of the Archbishop of Florence in many disputes. He is believed to have voted for Dalla Costa during the 1958 Conclave.
  • The Italian composer, church musician and Cardinal Domenico Bartolucci was ordained a priest by Cardinal Dalla Costa in 1939.
  • The professional cyclist and Tour de France winner Gino Bartali was married by Dalla Costa in 1940. A little later he involved Bartali in the rescue of Jews, among other things as a courier driver.
