Cardinal Santiago Luis Copello (born January 7, 1880 in San Isidro (Buenos Aires) , Argentina , † February 9, 1967 in Rome ) was Archbishop of Buenos Aires .

Life

Santiago Luis Copello received his theological and philosophical training in the seminary of La Plata and at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome . He received on 28 October 1902, the sacrament of Holy Orders , and then worked as a chaplain in various communities of the Archdiocese of La Plata .

On November 8, 1918, Pope Benedict XV appointed him . as titular bishop of Aulon and auxiliary bishop in La Plata. He was ordained episcopate on March 30th of the following year by the bishop of La Plata, Juan Nepomuceno Terrero y Escalada . Co- consecrators were Auxiliary Bishop Francisco Alberti from Buenos Aires and the Bishop of San Juan de Cuyo , José Américo Orzali .

Pope Pius XI appointed him on May 15, 1928 auxiliary bishop in Buenos Aires. In the same year Santiago Luis Copello took over the administration of the Archdiocese of Buenos Aires as vicar general and became military vicar of Argentina .

He was named Archbishop of Buenos Aires on October 20, 1932, and took office on December 18 of the same year. On December 16, 1935, Pius XI took him. as a cardinal priest with the titular church of San Girolamo dei Croati (degli Schiavoni) in the college of cardinals . Copello was the first Argentine cardinal . In 1936 the Pope also awarded him the title of Primate of Argentina.

Santiago Luis Cardinal Copello represented the Pope at numerous celebrations as papal legate . When tensions between the Peronist regime and the Church increased in 1955, Cardinal Santiago Luis Copello left Argentina and became Cardinal of the Curia . He took part in the conclave in 1958 and 1963 . Pope John XXIII on March 25, 1959, he renounced the Archdiocese of Buenos Aires and appointed him Chancellor of the Holy Roman Church ; on December 14th of the same year he was appointed cardinal priest with the titular church of San Lorenzo in Damaso .

From 1962 to 1965 he took part in the Second Vatican Council . Santiago Luis Cardinal Copello died on February 9, 1967 in Rome and was buried in the Cathedral of Buenos Aires.
