The Argentine Military Ordinariate ( Spanish Obispado Castrense de Argentina ) is a military ordinariate in Argentina and responsible for the Argentine armed forces .
history
The military ordinariate in the Republic of Argentina cares for members of the Argentine armed forces of Catholic denominations with pastoral care. It was made by Pope Pius XII. Erected on July 8, 1957. By mutual agreement between the Holy See and the Republic of Argentina, the seat of the Argentine military ordinariate is located in Buenos Aires . Established as the Apostolic Vicariate from the proclamation of the papal bull of July 8, 1957 , it was elevated to a diocese on April 21, 1986. In 1957, the Archbishop of Córdoba , Fermín Emilio Lafitte , was appointed Vicar Apostolic of Argentina (military).
The military ordinariate remained vacant from 2007 to 2017. In 2005, the then military bishop, Antonio Juan Baseotto , publicly criticized the law proposed by the government of Néstor Kirchner to legalize abortion . Kirchner then relieved him of his functions as military bishop by decree. The Holy See stuck to Baseotto, but the army command made it practically impossible for him to exercise his office. Even after Baseotto was relieved of his office by the Pope in 2007 due to reasons of age, the government of Cristina Fernández de Kirchner and the Holy See were unable to agree on a new candidate to fill the office again. This only happened in 2017 under the government of Mauricio Macri .
