Fermín Emilio Lafitte (born November 2, 1888 in Peyrun , Hautes-Pyrénées , France ; † August 8, 1959 in Córdoba , Argentina ) was an Argentine Roman Catholic clergyman of French origin who served as Bishop and Archbishop of Córdoba and for a short time served as Archbishop of Buenos Aires .

Life

Lafitte was born in France and emigrated to Argentina. He received on 15 August 1911, the sacrament of Holy Orders . On July 7, 1927 he was by Pope Pius XI. called Bishop of Cordoba. He was ordained bishop on October 16, 1927, by the Apostolic Nuncio in Argentina, Archbishop Filippo Cortesi ; Co-consecrators were the Bishop of La Plata , Francisco Alberti , and the Bishop of San Juan de Cuyo , José Américo Orzali . On April 20, 1934, the diocese of Cordoba was founded by Pope Pius XII. raised to the archbishopric , and Bishop Fermín Lafitte became its first archbishop.

He was considered one of the leading conservatives in the Argentine curia and sparked disputes in the relationship between state and church by organizing secular reforms against President Juan Perón . In 1958, under the Archbishop of Buenos Aires, Cardinal Santiago Luis Copello , he was appointed Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese of Buenos Aires. Pope John XXIII appointed Cardinal Copello on May 26, 1959 as apostolic administrator, so that the office of Archbishop of Buenos Aires automatically passed to Lafitte. Lafitte was also appointed pastor of the newly created military diocese in Argentina, which had special responsibility for members of the armed forces. He was Archbishop of Buenos Aires for less than three months, because he died on August 8, 1959. The causes of his death are not publicly known, but this occurred while he was holding a mass in front of the troops while visiting the naval school and he should have started to feel dizzy.

His remains were interred in the Buenos Aires Cathedral.
