Domenico Rivarola (* 1575 in Genoa ; † January 3, 1627 in Rome ) was an Italian archbishop and cardinal .

Life

He was born in Genoa in 1575 as the second son of Ottavio Rivarola and Nicoletta Lomellini. Rivarola came from a noble family and was believed to be a nephew of Giulio Rivarola , the apostolic nuncio in Portugal , and of Domenico Rivarola, the designated bishop of Fermo . He completed his studies in Genoa in utroque iure and, as a young man, became a canon of the cathedral chapter of San Lorenzo in Genoa.

He moved to Rome to the court of Cardinal Scipione Caffarelli Borghese . On December 10, 1608 he was appointed Bishop of Aléria in Corsica . The episcopal ordination donated him on 28 of the same month Cardinal Michelangelo Tonti ; Co- consecrators were Metello Bichi , former Bishop of Sovana , and Valeriano Muti , Bishop of Città di Castello . However, Domenico Rivarola stayed in Rome, where Cardinal Caffarelli granted him an exemption from the residence obligation for the office of Uditore . On March 30, 1609, after he had given up the seat of Aleria, he received the titular seat of Nazareth .

He was appointed extraordinary legate to Henry IV of France and entrusted with the task of urging the king to refrain from his plans to invade Italy. However, the king died before the arrival of Rivarola, who stood by the apostolic nuncio in France for a period and then returned to Italy. Here he was entrusted with the task of settling a dispute between the town of Rieti and the Cantalice Castle .

In the consistory of August 17, 1611 , Pope Paul V appointed him cardinal. On September 12th of the same year he was given the title church Santi Silvestro e Martino ai Monti with the rank of cardinal priest . In 1612 he received a legation in Romagna, where he fought against bandits and robbers. However, since he achieved no significant results, the pontiff placed him in the years 1617–1619 the then Bishop of Forlì , Cesare Bartolelli , as apostolic delegate.

Rivarola took part in the conclaves of 1621 and 1623 , in which Gregory XV. and Urban VIII. were elected.

He died in Rome and was first buried in the church of Santa Maria della Scala and later transferred to Santa Maria della Vittoria .
