Carlo Gaudenzio Madruzzo (dt. Karl Gaudenz Freiherr von Madrutz ) (* 1562 in Issogne , Valle d'Aosta ( Italy ), † August 14, 1629 in Rome ) was Prince-Bishop of Trent and Cardinal .

Life

Madruzzo came from a long-established family of politicians and church princes. He was a son of Giovanni Frederico Madruzzo (1535–1586) and his wife Isabelle de Challant (1531–1596). He was the nephew of Cardinal Giovanni Ludovico Madruzzo (1532-1600), the Prince-Bishop of Trento and great-nephew of Cardinal Cristoforo Madruzzo (1512-1578).

He studied philosophy at the Jesuit college in Ingolstadt from 1577 to 1582 and law in Pavia from 1584 to 1586 . He lived with his uncle, Cardinal Giovanni Ludovico di Madruzzo, and accompanied him to the Diet in Augsburg in 1582 and to the Diet in Regensburg in 1594 .

On October 23, 1595 appointed him Pope Clement VIII. To Coadjutor Bishop of his uncle Giovanni di Ludovico Madruzzo. He was consecrated on February 11, 1596 by Jacopo Roveglio (Rovelli) the bishop of Feltre . Co- consecrators were Sebastian Cattaneo OP , the bishop of Chiemsee and Alberto Valier , the titular bishop of Famagusta . On April 2, 1600 he became Prince-Bishop of Trento.

In the consistory of June 9, 1604, he was created cardinal by Pope Clement VIII. On June 20, 1605, as a cardinal priest , he received the “cardinal purple” (red galero (cardinal's hat), cappa magna and fur mozzetta ), and San Tommaso in Parione was given to him as the titular church . In 1616 he received San Cesareo in Palatio and on March 2, 1626 San Lorenzo in Lucina as titular church. He was a participant in the March / April 1605 conclave for the election of Pope Leo XI. who died after 17 days. In the conclave of May 1605 he elected Cardinal Camillo Borghese as Pope Paul V. In the conclave of February 1621 he elected Cardinal Alessandro Ludovisi as Pope Gregory XV. and on August 6, 1623 Cardinal Maffeo Barberini to Pope Urban VIII. On September 16, 1626 he became Cardinal Bishop of the Suburbicarian diocese of Sabina .

He died on August 14, 1629 and was buried in the chapel of S. Onofrio in the Roman church of Santa Maria dell'Anima . His successor as Prince Bishop of Trento was his nephew Carlo Emanuele Madruzzo .
