Act

He studied from 1701 in Rome at the Collegium Germanicum and was ordained a priest in 1720. As early as 1701 he was cathedral chapter in Trento. After the death of his uncle, he was elected Bishop of Trento on June 19 with the support of Austria. The papal confirmation took place on November 22nd and on December 18th he took possession of his diocese, on February 4th, 1731 he was ordained a bishop. At the beginning of his term of office he fulfilled his duties, so he had the cathedral restored. From 1741, after the death of his brother Augustin and the dean Karl Konstanz von Trapp, who had a strong influence on him, his administration changed significantly from 1741. He organized festivals and games, traveled with his court to the Carnival in Venice and was accompanied by his court jesters on his visitation trips. As the debt grew rapidly, the cathedral chapter demanded a change of his lifestyle in 1747, when this did not materialize, his resignation. Since this too was in vain, the chapter turned to the Pope and Empress. Pope Benedict XIV sent a warning letter, Maria Theresa sent government councilor Josef Ignaz Hormayr to negotiate with Thun. In 1748 he agreed to accept a coadjutor with the right to administer the diocese and to succeed him. Thun's nephew, Bishop Leopold Ernst von Firmian from Seckau, was elected . After his resignation in 1756, Francesco Felice Alberti d'Enno followed as coadjutor.

Thun withdrew from Trent and no longer interfered in the administration of the diocese. After his death on September 7, 1758, he was buried in the Cathedral of Trento .
