Carlo Emanuele Madruzzo
Carlo Emanuele Madruzzo Count of Challant, Fenis, Avio Aaberg (born November 7, 1599 in Issogne , Aosta Valley ( Italy ), † December 15, 1658 in Trento ) was Prince-Bishop of Trento .
Life
Madruzzo came from a long-established family of politicians and church princes. He was a son of Emmanuele Renato Madruzzo († 1614) and his wife Philiberte Emmanuelle de Seyssel (1531–1596). He was the nephew of Cardinal Carlo Gaudenzio Madruzzo (1562–1629), the great-nephew of Cardinal Giovanni Ludovico Madruzzo (1532–1600) and great-great-nephew of Cardinal Cristoforo Madruzzo (1512–1578), the Prince-Bishops of Trent.
With an imperial decree on July 2, 1622 he was appointed coadjutor bishop of his uncle Carlo Gaudenzio. Pope Gregory XV confirmed this appointment on August 24, 1622 and appointed him titular bishop of Aureliopolis in Asia minori . He was ordained a priest on October 28, 1627 and two days later, on October 30, 1627, by his uncle Carlo Gaudenzio de Madruzzo as bishop. On August 14, 1629 he was his successor installed as Prince-Bishop of Trient and on May 21, 1630 in the Cathedral of Trento in his diocese.
He was the fourth and last representative of the House of Madruzzo on the Trento cathedral and the only one who was not called to the college of cardinals . Nor did he take on the international role that had given his predecessors so much glamor. Nevertheless, he had to resolve various issues on a political level, such as the claims to the Principality of Trento made by Archduchess Claudia de 'Medici.
He tried in vain to prevent his family from becoming extinct by asking for a layperson to legitimize his offspring by marriage to his mistress Claudia Particella, daughter of one of his noble councilors. But this was rejected by the Pope.
He died on December 15, 1658 and was buried in the crypt of the Cathedral of Trento .
