Johann Benedikt Gentilotti
Johann Benedikt Gentilotti (born July 11, 1672 in Trient , † September 20, 1725 in Rome ) was a scholar and for a few days in 1725 Prince-Bishop of Trento .
Life
Johann Benedikt Gentilotti was born in Trento in 1672 as the son of the bishop Johann Baptist Gentilotti and the Cecilia Baroness von Lehner. The Gentilotti family came from Val Camonica and had lived in Trento since the 16th century. She was ennobled in 1617 with the title of Engelsbrunn, and in 1685 Emperor Leopold raised her to hereditary knighthood.
Gentilotti studied law and ancient languages as well as history at the Universities of Salzburg , Innsbruck and La Sapienza University in Rome. He belonged to the Propaganda Congregation and was a professor at the Sapienza. In 1703 he was appointed by Archbishop Johann Ernst von Thun as Privy Councilor and Chancellery Director to Salzburg, and in 1704 he moved to Vienna as Prefect of the Court Library.
Gentilotti was involved in the Italia Sacra and the edition of the works of John Chrysostom and cataloged the Latin manuscripts of the court library. He received a canonical in Trient in 1722 and in 1723 was nominated by Emperor Joseph I to judge the German nation at the Rota and rector of the Anima . Gentilotti, who only had minor orders , was elected Bishop of Trent by the Cathedral Chapter of Trent on September 9, 1725 at the request of the Emperor . Gentilotti died in Rome before he left for his diocese and was buried in the church of Santa Maria dell'Anima .
