Cristoforo Sizzo de Noris (born August 19, 1706 in Trento ; † June 13, 1776 ) was Prince-Bishop of Trento from 1763 to 1776 .

Origin and education

He was born in Trento in 1706 as the son of Alberto Sizzo de Noris and Barbara Trentini. The Sizzo de Noris family has been recorded in Trento since the 16th century. She was ennobled in 1649 and raised to the rank of imperial count in 1774.

After attending the Jesuit high school in Trento, Sizzo de Noris studied in Dillingen and Salzburg . After a serious accident, he decided to pursue a spiritual career. Ordained a priest on May 30, 1733 , he went to Rome to continue his studies. In 1750, after the resignation of his uncle, he became Cathedral Chapter in Trento.

After the death of Bishop Francesco Felice Alberti d'Enno , the emperor's candidate, Peter Michael Vigil von Thun and Hohenstein , could not achieve a majority of votes in the cathedral chapter . Then the right to elect a bishop fell to the Pope, who appointed Christoforo Sizzo de Noris on August 22, 1763 as Bishop of Trento. He seized on December 19, owned by his diocese and received on 21 December 1763 by the Trent Bishop Bartolomeo Antonio Passi the episcopal ordination . He received the imperial regalia on June 30, 1764.

Sizzo de Noris devoted himself to pastoral care, he toured his diocese and preached himself. The leadership of the seminary was withdrawn from Somas in 1771 and transferred to diocesan priests. After the abolition of the Jesuit order , the collegiate building of the order was given to the seminary.

Sizzo de Noris supported the enlightener Carlantonio Pilati and was close to reform Catholicism. He did not oppose the reduction in the number of church holidays ordered by Empress Maria Theresa , but defended himself against attempts to curtail the rights of the bishopric. Despite an objection to the Reichstag in Regensburg, he was unable to prevent attacks such as the suppression of an uprising in the judiciary by the state government of Tyrol in 1772.

After his death, Sizzo de Noris, who is considered one of the most important bishops of Trento, was buried in the Cathedral of Trento .
