Johann Michael Reichsgraf von Spaur and Valör , Italian : Giovanni Michele Spaur (* July 7, 1638 in Castello della Torre , Welsch-Metz ; † April 22, 1725 in Trient ) was Prince-Bishop of Trento from 1698 to 1725 .

Life

He came from a Tyrolean aristocratic family, his parents were Johann Anton von Spaur and Valör and Maria Judith Countess von Arsio.

Johann Michael was accepted into the cathedral chapter of Trento in 1662 and ordained a priest the following year. He represented cathedral chapter and bishop several times in the Tyrolean state parliament. Johann Michael became pastor of Deutschmetz in 1689 . On March 8, 1696 he was elected Bishop of Trento, confirmation by Pope Innocent XII. took place on September 24th, the consecration on October 19th, 1696.

Johann Michael visited his diocese frequently and ensured discipline in the clergy . In 1715 he introduced the Roman ritual in the diocese. His nepotism aroused displeasure, so he appointed his nephew Johann Michael Wenzel auxiliary bishop in Trento, but failed at the cathedral chapter when trying to determine him as his successor. Johann Michael essentially left the administration of the Hochstift to his relatives

During the War of the Spanish Succession , Bavarian and French troops marched into the Hochstift in 1703 and Trento was shelled. From Emperor Charles VI. the bishopric got back the Castellario , which had been lost under Leopold I.

Johann Michael died in Trient on April 22, 1725 and was buried in the Trient Cathedral.
