history

In autumn 1975 Piatkowski and Rieck founded the Piatkowski & Rieck group in Rostock . Before that, they had performed songs from other peoples, for example from South America, in the KuBa singing club in Rostock . Both were studying at the University of Rostock at the time and were also studying music at the same time: Rieck in singing and guitar , Piatkowski in singing, guitar and piano . You have been a participant in the chanson days at Michaelsstein Monastery several times .

In 1977 they heard several long-playing records by the West German folk singer Helmut Debus , who sang in Low German . Inspired by this, they decided to write their texts in the Mecklenburg variant of Low German in future .

In 1983 her first long-playing record was released by the GDR record company Amiga , Plattdeutsche Lieder . The songs were mostly traditional with new arrangements. Some of the songs came from the project Du schläfst, Land Mecklenburg , in which Piatkowski and Rieck had collected texts and songs from the time around the revolution of 1848 . Two years after the release of the first album, they made their first appearance in the Federal Republic of Germany , in 1987 they received the Bad Bevensen Prize in Bad Bevensen, Lower Saxony, for special interpretations of the Low German song. In the same year her second LP, Utkiek (German roughly: Outlook) was released. The third musician was Fred Saupe ( tuba , accordion ) and another 35 guest musicians, including several wind groups and the electric guitarist Gisbert Piatkowski . The album only contains new compositions, mostly by the musicians themselves, but also by Woody Guthrie and Helmut Debus.

In 1991 the duo released their first CD, Old Meklenburg for Ever . Shortly thereafter, Piatkowski decided to work as a freelance doctor. Rieck switched to the folk band Liederjan in 1992 , where he replaced Edzard Wagenaar. He stayed with this band until 2001. Since then he has been working as a musician and organizer of seminars.

stylistics

The songs by Piatkowski & Rieck are artistically arranged. The majority of the pieces have a serious background and themes such as war, imprisonment and parting are treated with great intensity. There are also some happy songs, some of which are mocking songs.
