Michael Funken (publicist)

Michael Funken (born August 30, 1963 ) is a German publicist, ZDF editor and PhD philosopher .

Life and work

After graduating from the Arndt-Gymnasium in Krefeld in 1982, Funken initially did military service, after being recognized as a conscientious objector, civil service until 1984. From 1984 to 1986, he did an editorial traineeship at the Westdeutsche Zeitung in Düsseldorf. He then began studying philosophy, political science and history at the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf , where he received his Magister Artium in 1990 and a Dr. phil. graduated (PhD on evolution theory).

From 1988 Funken worked parallel to his studies as a freelancer for dpa , a city magazine and WDR radio, and from 1992 for WDR television. From 1992 to 1996 he was a research assistant at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena , where he researched and published on media philosophy. In 1996 he founded the “Critical Yearbook of Philosophy” (published by the Thuringian Society for Philosophy), and in 1997 with Peter Moser the e-zine “Information Philosophy on the Internet”, which he published and edited until 2006.

From 1996 he was back in Düsseldorf as a TV reporter for WDR and ZDF . In 2003 he became head of the service at Länderspiegel at the ZDF headquarters in Mainz. Since 2007 he has been an editor in the ZDF Zeitgeschichte editorial team. Funken is the author of several TV documentaries and books. He is also active as a lecturer and coach in journalism training (including International Danube University Krems ).

In 2016 he was elected chairman of the ZDF operating group of the VRFF-Die Mediengewerkschaft and has been an exempt member of the ZDF staff council at headquarters since 2018.
