Gunther Karsten (born September 23, 1961 ) is a German memory athlete ( memory world champion 2007) and author.

Life

Karsten is married to Michaela Buchvaldová-Karsten , who is also a memory athlete . As a chemist and biotechnologist, he runs a full-time patent translation office. Karsten leads seminars for mental, learning and memory training. From 1998 to 2004 he was German memory sports champion seven times in a row and was defeated in 2005 by the only 19-year-old Clemens Mayer , who was also world memory champion in the same year .

In 2007 Karsten was again German champion and achieved the best result ever achieved in a memory decathlon and thus also achieved first place in the world rankings. Shortly thereafter, he became the first memory champion at the World Cup from August 31 to September 2 in Bahrain .

He also supports the promotion of young talent, his best-known student is the multiple junior world champion and the youngest high school graduate in Germany 2003 Christiane Stenger . Karsten was able to set world records in numerous individual disciplines. So he held until 2009 z. B. in the 1 hour number discipline, in which you have to memorize an arbitrary sequence of decimal digits in 60 minutes, the world record with 1949 digits (the record is now at 3260 digits). In 2001, 2005 and 2006 he was vice world champion, in 2005 and 2006 he was also team world champion with the German team. Karsten has already had a number of television appearances, E.g. in the Grips show with Günther Jauch , in which he demonstrated using Verona Feldbusch how one can enormously improve one's memory performance with the help of mnemonics . In 2003 Karsten published the book Success Memory, which has been translated into several languages .

In October 2009 Gunther Karsten took part in the Austrian feature film Unforgettable . He plays himself as a memory artist and participant in the World Memory Championship in London. The film was released in April 2010.

He has been a member of the highly gifted cafeteria association since 1985 . Together with other memory athletes, he founded the MemoryXL eV association in 2002, and was its first president from 2002 to 2006.
