Nicole Grether (born October 17, 1974 in Schopfheim , Germany ) is a German badminton player .

Athletic career

Nicole started playing badminton at the age of eight. Her sports teacher at the time, the badminton trainer Hans-Georg Kolodziej, quickly recognized Nicole's talent and talent. In 1988 Nicole became German student champion in women's singles for the first time. From 1982 to 1992 Nicole played for TSG Schopfheim and BC Brombach . In 1992 the company moved to Saarbrücken . Training was continued at the Olympic base there and the federal badminton base. There was also a club change to SSV Heiligenwald, for whom Grether played badminton in the 1st Bundesliga from the 92/93 season to the 1995/96 season . 1993 saw the first appearance in the German senior national team.

From 1994 to 1997 Nicole was in the sports promotion group Bexbach in the German armed forces . Then from 1997 to 2001 she successfully trained as a travel agent in Berlin . The next club that Nicole played for was SC Bayer 05 Uerdingen . Here she was active from the 1996/97 season until the club's withdrawal from the Bundesliga in the 2002/03 season. With this team she was three times German team champion in badminton. Since May 2001 Grether was back in the Bundeswehr, now in the Potsdam sports promotion group. From the 2003/04 season onwards he worked for the Empor Brandenburger Tor club in Berlin. In the meantime, in May 1997, the company moved to Kleinmachnow . Initially, Nicole trained here at the state badminton base in Berlin. Since 1997 she has been looked after by the Berlin Olympic Training Center. Her coach since 1999 has been the former top Indonesian player Bram Fernardin.

In March 2003 there was another move to Berlin. Nicole has had a second home in Mülheim an der Ruhr since July 2006 and also trains there. She shares an apartment there with European Youth Champion Janet Köhler . Nicole is currently in 9th place in the world rankings (as of July 6, 2006) in the women's doubles with her partner Juliane Schenk . In the women's singles she is represented in the top 50 in the world. She is also the German record player with currently 121 appearances (as of 12/2007) in 106 international matches.

The Norwegian International they withdrew on 17 November 2007 at the quarter-finals of the women's doubles a tear of the Achilles tendon , which it forced a multi-month break. After the Achilles tendon was ruptured again in December 2007, Nicole began ReHa in January 2008.

At the Singapore Open , which began on June 10, 2008, Nicole Grether became active again for the first time after her Achilles tendon injury. In singles, she qualified for the main draw and in women's doubles, together with the Canadian player Charmaine Reid .

In the context of the German badminton championships in 2011, it became known that Nicole Grether had asked the German Badminton Association for clearance to play tournaments for Canada in the future . During this event, she also said that she would not hand over her German passport. According to Martin Kranitz, DBV sports director, this approval was granted.
