Memory techniques in competition

Like all memory athletes , Reinhard uses a mixture of visualization, application of the route method and chunking in order to be able to memorize the information given in the competition.

In the number-based disciplines, information is converted into words using a number-letter code so that it can be "read" and presented visually. A similar "translation" occurs when the playing cards are imprinted.

In order to guarantee the order of these “images”, they are anchored on a (real or fictional) path with a series of waypoints, through interaction between image and location, and so stored. In the process of remembering, the path is followed again place by place, and the images are called up again - and with them the information that is translated back from the image.

Reinhard uses the following systems, among others, to memorize information:

  • He has 10,000 pictures for digits, so each combination of four digits stands for a picture. 1943 is for example “tower” (1 = t, 9 = short u, 4 = r, 3 = m).
  • He has 2704 pictures for playing cards, so two cards from a 52 hand become one picture. The combination of jacks of hearts and 5 of diamonds is, for example, "rabbit" (J = h, hearts = a, 5 = s, diamonds = e).
