There are 32 sales subsidiaries worldwide and numerous international sales partners.

Company history

The company was founded in 1922 by master locksmith Anton Paar as a one-man repair shop. He developed a good reputation and made initial contacts with universities and research institutions. He trained his daughter, Margareta Platzer, to be a skilled worker in the 1920s. As the first master locksmith in Styria, she followed in her father's footsteps in 1932. Her talent in fine mechanics and precision manufacturing, together with Otto Kratky's knowledge, formed the basis for Anton Paar's first scientifically analytical instrument: the Kratky small - angle X-ray camera , which was produced on behalf of Kratky.

Starting in 1963, took over Ulrich Santner (born August 27, 1932 † February 13, 2020, 1994 Kommerzialrat, 1995 Entrepreneur of the Year 2004 Honorary Senator of the Technical University of Graz , 2016 "citizen" of the city of Graz), the son of Margaret Platzer, the management. He laid the foundation for the company's subsequent expansion in the field of measurement technology. He also intensified the exchange and contact with universities and contributed to the transfer of new technologies from research to industry.

In 1997 his son-in-law Friedrich Santner joined the management. He has been the sole managing director since 2002. The focus of his work was the organization of global sales through his own subsidiaries. Under his leadership, new sales and service branches were established and complementary measurement technology companies were acquired.

In 2003 the family business was incorporated into a charitable foundation.

In January 2020, the management was expanded to include Friedrich Santner's sons. Jakob Santner becomes CTO and Dominik Santner COO of the company, Friedrich Santner remains CEO.

statistics

The number of employees has increased from 580 in 2005 to 3,400 (2020). Around a third work at the headquarters in Graz, which is also the group's largest production site. Group sales rose from 71 million euros to 409 million euros (2020) in the same period.

95 percent of the products of the global measurement technology manufacturer are exported to more than 110 countries around the world.

Around 17 percent of the annual turnover of Anton Paar GmbH is invested in research and development in order to develop new measuring principles, sensor generations and technology concepts.

Products from Anton Paar GmbH

Core areas - measurement, analysis, chemical synthesis:

  • Digestion devices for chemical analysis and synthesis: Anton Paar develops and produces devices that prepare, extract and synthesize samples with the aid of microwaves.
  • Automation & Robotics: Anton Paar offers fully automatic sample handling for all analysis requirements with high sample throughput and for monitoring production processes. These automation solutions are manufactured according to customer requirements.
  • Density and concentration measurement: Anton Paar measuring devices are used to determine the density and concentration of liquids, e.g. B. in product development, quality assurance and production-accompanying controls, for example in the food and beverage industry. Anton Paar is the world market leader with its measuring devices for the quality control of beverages. Anton Paar launched the world's first digital density meter in 1967. Since then, density measurement has been based on the principle of the flexural oscillator , the measuring principle of which has been optimized over the years.
  • Mineral oil analysis: Anton Paar develops and produces mineral oil testing devices that analyze the properties of mineral oil and mineral oil products, such as the flash point, the distillation curve, corrosivity, oxidation stability, low-temperature properties, consistency or ductility.
  • Microwave technology for chemical analysis and synthesis
  • Micro and nano hardness testing, scratch testing and layer thickness measurement
  • Raman spectroscopy : In December 2016, Anton Paar acquired a product line from the field of Raman spectroscopy as well as licensed handheld Raman technology in the USA. Raman spectrometers are measuring devices that take a chemical fingerprint of the molecules of liquids and solids.
  • Refractometers and polarimeters : Refractometers determine concentrations in liquids, polarimeters measure optical rotation. The measuring instruments are used in the quality control of active pharmaceutical ingredients and foods.
  • Systems for X-ray structure analysis : Anton Paar produces systems for material characterization by means of X-ray small-angle scattering and measuring chambers for X-ray diffraction. The entry into the field of X-ray structure analysis took place in the 1950s when the company started a cooperation with Otto Kratky . The first small-angle X-ray cameras were further developed by Anton Paar into complete systems that are used today in research and teaching, in the field of life science and materials science.
  • Tribology
  • Particle and surface characterization: With the Anton Paar "Litesizer" measuring instruments, the particle size and the zeta potential in liquids are determined by means of dynamic light scattering . This is used to examine the stability of particle dispersions and emulsions and to determine the charge on surfaces. With the acquisition of the product line for laser diffraction from Cilas in June 2017, Anton Paar expanded its range of particle analysis. The Anton Paar SurPASS TM 3 instrument analyzes the zeta potential on macroscopic solid surfaces using streaming potential and current flow measurements. For mechanical surface characterization on a micro- and nanometer scale, Anton Paar develops measuring devices such as scratch testers, hardness testers (indenter) and tribometers. Anton Paar in surface characterization 2017 an atomic force microscope ( Atomic Force Microscope placed) on the market, determines the surface properties on the nanometer scale.
  • Process analysis technology : Process analysis technology from Anton Paar is used by plant operators in the food and beverage, petrochemical and chemical industries. The density of liquids and gases, the concentration of substances dissolved in liquids, dissolved oxygen and dissolved carbon dioxide are determined by high-precision sensors. These sensors are integrated in the production process and enable continuous measurement during production.
  • Viscometers and rheological measuring instruments: Viscometers determine the viscosity ( viscosity ) of liquids and semi-solid products at different temperatures. Rheometry and rheology deal with the deformation and flow behavior of matter. Rheometers measure the visco-elastic behavior of flowable and deformable materials. Anton Paar offers a series of rotation and oscillation rheometers for rheological measurements, which have established themselves as the "MCR rheometer" product group. The MCR series from Anton Paar is characterized by its flexible application possibilities. The modular concept of the new rheometer series makes it possible to meet a large number of rheological requirements and allows measurements of samples from leading industrial sectors.

Other areas:

  • Development and manufacture of high quality mechanical and electronic parts, assemblies and complete devices
  • Anton Paar SportsTec GmbH: Development of a training and analysis system for professional sports (soccer).
  • Brew : In March 2018, the Anton Paar GmbH opened the show brewery brew house with its own serving on their premises in Graz.

Others

The non-profit Santner Private Foundation, registered with the Regional Court for Civil Law Matters in Graz, has been the owner of Anton Paar GmbH since 2003. The foundation pursues exclusively and directly charitable and benevolent purposes. It uses its income to promote research in the fields of natural sciences and technology, as well as the prevention of addictions and the rehabilitation of addicts as part of the Offline project .

Offline is financed by the foundation and carried out by Caritas . Addicts are temporarily employed in a furniture and textile workshop, for example, while the offline retail vintage shop sells the products in Mariahilferstrasse.

Shape Tec

On December 1, 2006, with the takeover of the supplier company MSB Morocutti, the subsidiary Anton Paar Shape Tec GmbH was founded, which in 2010 moved from Puchstrasse in Graz to the Wundschuh industrial park, 13 kilometers south of the Paar headquarters. Shape Tec processes sheet metal, for example into housings, machined into medical implants, builds electronics groups and paints them; supplies numerous external customers in addition to Anton Paar GmbH. In 2020 around 350 employees worked in Wundschuh.
