action

Meteorologist Andy Goodman is about to retire. He observes three hurricanes, one of which has already ravaged Las Vegas .

TV reporter Amy Harkin reports on the power problems in the Chicago area. A heat wave has been going on for six weeks. The residents were asked to limit their energy consumption so that the power supply would not collapse.

The storms meet near Chicago , where they become a storm of enormous force. Mitch Benson, the executive at Midwest Electric, fears the storm could destroy the city's main power station.

Amy's pregnant sister-in-law is trapped in the stopped elevator, but can be freed. Amy's brother, a pilot, lands near Chicago in the brief period of calm to get his pregnant wife and a few other people out of harm's way. Amy stays with her injured colleague until the wind calms down.
