Robert Earl Jones (born February 3, 1910 in Senatobia , Mississippi , USA , † September 7, 2006 in Englewood , New Jersey , USA) was an American actor. He was the father of actor James Earl Jones .

Life

He dropped out of school early to lease a farm and later work for the railroad. After he became unemployed during the Great Depression, he began to get by as a boxer and in 1937 was, among other things, sparring partner of world boxing champion Joe Louis .

Robert Earl Jones began his acting career in the late 1930s, with his first two films from 1939 and 1940 directed by black independent filmmaker Oscar Micheaux . He made a name for himself in the theater in the 1960s, appearing in many plays alongside his son James Earl Jones .

In 1973, Robert Earl Jones starred in the seven- star blockbuster The Clou and appeared in 1983 alongside Eddie Murphy and Dan Aykroyd in the comedy film The Soldiers of Fortune . In 1985 he played a minor supporting role in The Only Witness with Harrison Ford . He made his last film appearance in 1992 on the side of Jeff Daniels and Ming-Na Wen in the drama Silent Rain .

Robert Earl Jones was married several times. He made headlines when he ran the New York City Marathon again in 1996 at the age of 86. He died of natural causes on September 7, 2006.
