Location of Vélez Sársfield in Buenos Aires

Vélez Sársfield is a district in the west of the Argentine capital Buenos Aires . It has 36,000 inhabitants (as of 2001) on an area of 2.4 km² and belongs to Comuna C10. Vélez Sársfield is bounded by the streets Av. Segurola, Juan Agustín García, Av. Lope de Vega, Av. Juan B. Justo, Av. Corro, Medina, Av. Juan Bautista Alberdi and Mariano Acosta.

Description and history

The district was named after Dalmacio Vélez Sársfield , the author of the "Código Civil de la República Argentina" (Argentine Civil Code). It is a typical Buenos Aires residential area with low buildings that grew rapidly as a result of the population increase at the beginning of the 20th century. Today Vélez Sársfield is predominantly a residential area of the middle class with only a small proportion of businesses. The largest square in the district is Plaza Coronel Ramón L. Falcón with 7,300 m².

There are three sports clubs in the district: Club Atlético Capital, Club Social y Deportivo Miter and Club Social y Deportivo Villa Luro. The first division club CA Vélez Sársfield is based in the Estadio José Amalfitani in the nearby Liniers district and not, as one might assume, in Vélez Sársfield.

The Maldonado flows through Vélez Sársfield. At the beginning of the 20th century it was laid in an underground canal, above which the main street of the district, Avenida Juan B. Justo, runs. The Maldonado was once the border of the city of Buenos Aires before the localities of Flores and Belgrano emerged, which are now also part of Buenos Aires.
