Location of Agronomía in Buenos Aires

Agronomía is a district of the Argentine capital Buenos Aires . It is located in a south-easterly direction from the center and has almost 14,000 inhabitants (as of 2001) on an area of 2.1 km² . It was named after the Facultad de Agronomía ( Agronomic Faculty) of the University of Buenos Aires . The district is bounded by Avenida San Martín, Campana, Avenida Salvador María del Carril, Avenida de los Constituyentes and Avenida Chorroarín.

Parque Chas was previously part of Agronomía, but was granted the status of a separate district in December 2005.

history

The area of today's Agronomía used to belong to the Jesuits and was called "Chacra de los Jesuites". When the Order was expelled in 1769, the land fell back to the government. This was given to the "Real Colegio de San Carlos", which later became the "Colegio Nacional de Buenos Aires".

At the end of the 19th century a park was created on the property. In 1901, the government made 185 hectares available for this, 30 hectares of which were to be used for a train station, a model farm and an agricultural school (Escuela de Agricultura). The school had become necessary because of the policy of promoting the development of the country through the export of agricultural products.

The current part of the city was created around the park. The individual settlements all had the addition of "de Agronomía", which was ultimately also used as a district name. The building originally intended as a train station became the "Instituto Superior de Agronomía y Veterinaria" (Institute for Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine). The institute was founded on September 25, 1904 and five years later became the “Facultad de Agronomía y Veterinaria” of the University of Buenos Aires . In 1984 the two directions were separated and became the "School for Agriculture" and "School for Veterinary Medicine".

Attractions

In addition to the university buildings already mentioned, the meteorological station "Villa Ortúzar", the museums of anatomy (Museo de Anatomía) and surgical pathology (Museo de Patología Quirúrgica) can be seen in Agronomía.

There is also a 16 hectare project farm for educational purposes called “Del Campo a la Ciudad” (From the country to the city) in the district.

The writer Julio Cortázar lived in an apartment at 3246 Artigas Street . A street in the district was named after him.

The Church of San José del Talar with the pilgrimage image of the Virgin who unties the knot is located on Calle Navarro .

Sports

Agronomía is home to various sports clubs, including the “Asociación Atlética Argentinos Juniors”, the “Club El Trébol” and the “Club Social y Deportivo Agronomía Central”.
