Maria Knot Looser (also Knot Madonna or Mary of the Knot ) is a miraculous image in the Catholic pilgrimage church of St. Peter am Perlach in Augsburg .

Miraculous image

The concept of the untying knot is traced back to an explanation of the church father Irenaeus in his work Adversus haereses: "And so it happened that the knot of Eve's disobedience was untied through the obedience of Mary. What the Virgin Eve bound through unbelief, the Virgin Mary did solved by faith. " The baroque miraculous image was donated in 1700 by the Augsburg patrician Hieronymus Ambrosius Langenmantel (1641–1718), canon at St. Peter Abbey in Augsburg, for the altar of the “ Mother of Good Counsel ” and was created by the Augsburg artist Johann Georg Melchior Schmidtner . It shows the properties on a crescent moon Madonna as nodes in a long white tape dissolves and at the same time with the foot to the head of a snake as a symbol of the devil and the fall occurs and thus makes it more reversed. The knotted shape of the snake reflects the knot that Mary holds in her hands. The crescent moon Madonna is surrounded by twelve small and two large angels and a wreath of stars with seven visible six stars . The Holy Spirit hovers over her head in the form of a dove - an allusion to Mary as the bride of the Holy Spirit. The untying woman is clothed in the sun, as described in the Book of Revelation .

Under the crescent moon, a much smaller angel is shown with a human companion and his dog. This scene is interpreted as Tobias from the book Tobit , who is called with his dog ( Tob 5.17  EU , Tob 11.4  EU ) and the archangel Raphael as travel companion and matchmaker and ( Tob 6.10-13  EU ) from Nineveh travels to Ekbatana to Sarah to take her as wife.

Another meaning of the two small figures refers to the legend of how the foundation of the altar with the image of Mary came about. Accordingly, the foundation should be related to a family event. His grandfather Wolfgang Langenmantel (1586–1637) was about to split up from his wife Sophia Rentz (1590–1649) and therefore visited the Jesuit Father Jakob Rem SJ in Ingolstadt . In the picture the angel leads the traveler and points with his right hand to a distant place with a church. Father Rem prayed in front of a portrait of Mary and said: “In this religious act I will lift the bond of marriage , untie all the knots and straighten it.” Then peace returned between the married couple, the separation did not take place, and Langenmantel's grandson later commissioned the picture of the knot loosener as a reminder - The representation may be ambiguous and indicate both aspects in a baroque manner.

Regardless of the interpretation of the two travelers, the representation of Mary shows Our Lady as a helper in “untying” problems. It is interpreted in the sense that Maria should help to find a life partner and to cope with problems in the partnership . The "Knot Looser" is also supposed to support women suffering from breast cancer. Unlike Alexander the Great the Gordian knot , Mary does not untie the knot or the problem with force, but with empathy .

distribution

The "Augsburg
Knot Loosener " is in the south choir of the Perlach Church

The image of the Virgin who loosens the knot has found its way to many countries around the world. It is often part of the furnishing of churches and chapels, but it can also be used in other ways. The knot loosener is shown in the current praise of God for the diocese of Augsburg. The Knot Madonna is depicted on the Augsburg Peace Houses. A picture of the woman untying the knot also hangs in the Vatican's guest house ( Casa Santa Marta ). In 2017, a 50-euro gold coin in the Vatican City appeared with a depiction of the knot loosener. Inspired by the image of the knot loosener, a children's book with the same title was published in 2018.

South America

In South America , the veneration of Mary is now often linked to the image of the knot looser. The initiator was today's Pope Francis. A German nun sent him a postcard with the image of grace, which aroused his interest. Bergoglio sent his priesthood students with the pictures to the slums of Buenos Aires and commissioned an Eichstatt exchange student to document the Augsburg original with all the details in order to be able to make a copy. Contrary to reports to the contrary, he was never in Augsburg himself.

A copy was then made in Buenos Aires by the painter Ana Betta de Berti (Marta Beti), who has been in the San José del Talar church in Buenos Aires since December 8, 1996 , and especially on the 8th of the month thousands of people make pilgrimages. In the “Tierra Santa”, a religious theme park in Buenos Aires, a relief image of the knot can be found today.

In Brazil Maria became a knot looser a. a. made known by the couple Denis and Suzel Bourgerie. Sisters from the Maria Stern monastery in Augsburg also brought a picture of the knot loosener to Brazil.

Churches and chapels

There are several sacred buildings around the world in which Mary is depicted or venerated as the knot loosener:

  • Brazil
    • Armação dos Búzios : Capela de Nossa Senhora Desatadora de Nós
    • Campinas (two churches in one street): "Santuario Nossa Senhora Desatadora dos Nos" and "Capela Maria Porta do Céu" (Nossa Senhora Desatadora dos Nós)
  • Germany
    • Abensberg : House chapel of the St. Franziskus vocational training center with a bronze statue of "Maria Untouching"
    • Oberelsbach : Chapel of emergency help with statue of the knot loosener
    • Pirk : Chapel "Maria, the Knot Loosener"
  • Ireland
    • Moyross- Limerick : Painting on chestnut wood and iron sculpture in the "Corpus Christi Church"
  • Peru
    • Lima : Chapel of the Senora del Buen Consejo Parque

Forms of worship

The knot-loosener became a motif for novenas , devotions and word services.

At the 99th Katholikentag 2014 in Regensburg, visitors to the Augsburg diocese had the opportunity to write down prayer requests and tie the “knot of their lives” into a yellow ribbon. The 36 meter long ribbon with its 400 knots was brought to the picture of the knot loosener in Augsburg after the Catholic Day, in order to symbolically carry the unspoken concerns of numerous people in front of the Blessed Mother.

On May 9, 2015, a joint pilgrimage of all Bavarian dioceses led around 4,000 pilgrims to Augsburg to see the pilgrimage picture "Maria Untouchess". The pilgrimage was one of a series of seven pilgrimages with different goals in preparation for the centenary of the elevation of Mary to the patronage of Bavaria ( Patrona Bavariae ) in 2017.

In connection with the World Family Meeting in Philadelphia in September 2015, the artist Meg Saligman designed a Knot Grotto as an installation on the forecourt of the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul (Philadelphia) , in which people could write and tie concerns on strips of fabric. The installation was visited by tens of thousands of people and was blessed by Pope Francis .
