Johann Georg Melchior Schmidtner

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann Georg Melchior Schmidtner (* 1625 in Augsburg ; † 1705 there ) was a Swabian church painter .

Live and act

Johann Georg Melchior Schmidtner was a student of Johann Heinrich Schönfeld . He spent 15 years in Italy. Schmidtner created drawings and altarpieces, mainly for Swabian churches.

His best-known painting is the miraculous image of Maria Loosing the Knot in Augsburg , donated by Hieronymus Ambrosius Langenmantel (1641–1718) for his family altar . Contrary to the claim that the picture is particularly venerated by Pope Francis , who brought prints of it to Argentina and made it popular there, the Pope himself declared that he had never been to Augsburg and that he did not know the picture. A copy of the Schmidtner painting made as a result is said to be hanging in the San José del Talar church in Buenos Aires today . It is said to be visited by thousands of pilgrims on the 8th of each month. However, this is probably also incorrect information.
