Villa Urquiza is a district in the northwest of the Argentine capital Buenos Aires . It has 89,360 inhabitants (as of 2001) on an area of ​​5.6 km². The population density is 15,957 people per km², which is roughly the average in Buenos Aires.

history

Villa Urquiza was founded by Francisco Seeber . He was a soldier in the war against Paraguay, mayor of Buenos Aires from 1889 to 1890, businessman and president of Ferrocarril Oeste (Railway Company West).

Originally Villa Urquiza consisted of the three smaller districts Villa Catalinas, Villa Mazzini and Villa Modelo, which were located on a hill about 40 meters above sea level. At that time, Seeber owned the "Muelle de las Catalinas" port facility in an area that was lower down. He bought the land to fill in the property. Most of the workers on this project came from the Entre Ríos province . When the work was over, they asked to name the area after their local hero, Justo José de Urquiza .

Location and character

Villa Urquiza is located between Constituyentes, Crisólogo Larralde, Galván, Núñez, Tronador, Roosevelt, Rómulo S. Naón and La Pampa streets. The quarter is predominantly residential area, consisting of old houses and apartment buildings, quiet side streets and lively main streets. There are several parks. In the warmer months, residents often sit on chairs on the sidewalk.
