The Retiro bus station ( Spanish Terminal de Ómnibus de Retiro ) is the main bus station in the Argentine capital, Buenos Aires . It is located in the Retiro district not far from the three Retiro train stations and Villa 31 on Avenida Antártida Argentina.

The Retiro bus station offers connections to all parts of the country except Tierra del Fuego , to neighboring countries in Argentina and to Peru .

history

Around 1980 in Buenos Aires the plan arose to build a central bus station for all long-distance bus connections. Until then, the seat of the bus company determined the respective place of departure. The design by the architects Serra, Valera and Petrucci was awarded the contract, the Terminal de Ómnibus was built by the company Riva SA and opened on May 1, 1983. It originally served as a bus station for 58 bus companies. Since September 1993 it has been operated by the private company TEBA SA.

While Argentina's train network continued to shrink in the early 1990s, the Retiro bus station became increasingly important. In 1995 a renovation was necessary because the capacity limit had been reached. In 1997, a design by the architects Baudizzone, Lestard and Varas was awarded the contract for a further renovation, in the course of which the bus station was to be combined with the three train terminal stations Retiro Miter , Retiro Belgrano and Retiro San Martín . However, this plan was never realized.

The current building is three-story, 400 m long and has 75 bus bays and more than 200 ticket offices. The latter, as well as a branch of Banco Ciudad, are on the upper floor. The middle floor contains the bus bays, waiting areas, shops, snack bars and a reading room dedicated to Ernesto Sabato . From here it is also possible to access the bus station for the city buses on the forecourt of the Retiro train stations as well as the Retiro underground station. In the basement there are baggage and parcel drop-off counters as well as the offices of some bus companies that offer postal and monetary services. The taxi stands and short-term parking spaces can also be reached here. Around 40,000 people use the bus terminal every day, and between 1,400 and 2,000 buses frequent the train station.
