Arbatax, port and train station

Arbatax is a district of Tortolì in the province of Nuoro on the Italian Mediterranean island of Sardinia . The place has about 2270 inhabitants (as of 2017).

geography

Arbatax is located on a peninsula on the east coast roughly halfway between Olbia and the island's capital Cagliari . It is one of the ferry ports that can be used to reach the island from the mainland. Most of the porphyry dome on the peninsula is inaccessible to tourists because of several large holiday settlements and because of military restricted areas.

About 5 km inland is Tortolì , the former capital of the province of Ogliastra .

history

Traditional economic activities in the region around Arbatax go back to the 15th century according to state regulations. The construction of the port was a controversial project in terms of economic interests, which was implemented following a municipal resolution on October 22, 1852 for port construction.

economy

In addition to regional trade, fisheries, fish processing and port operations were the primary local sources of income in earlier times. From the 1960s onwards, industrialization began in the region with the construction of a paper mill and the establishment of a shipyard and steel construction company, until tourism developed a little became more important.

Attractions

The blood-red porphyry peaks protruding from the sea, the so-called red rocks (Italian: rocce rosse) of Arbatax, have been compared to the pinnacles of a cathedral. The red rocks of Arbatax are one of the great natural attractions in Sardinia. The rock protruding from the seashore consists of red porphyry and is embedded in abundant gray granite porphyry to the west and east. The red rocks are a landmark of Arbatax and are, somewhat hidden, directly in front of the entrance to the port area on the right-hand side of the road, when entering the port from the sea on the port side.

traffic

Arbatax has good road traffic connections in north-south direction via the SS125 , which runs both to the west near the city and to the town itself. The southwest of the island can be reached via the SS198. In addition to regional bus transport, there is a connection to long-distance bus transport through the largest public transport company ARST in Sardinia. Arbatax owns a station on the narrow-gauge railway line Mandas – Arbatax , it is served in the summer months by Trenino Verde , the tourism project of the Italian railway company Ferrovie della Sardegna. The Tortolì-Arbatax airfield existed near the place until 2011 , on which airport operations were suspended due to the declining number of flight movements. The port facilities not only serve as a fishing and pleasure boat port, but also for regular ferry services (including to Civitavecchia and Genoa) and merchant shipping.
