Group 1925

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 1925 group, Writers ' Union was a loose association of 39 predominantly left-wing German writers and artists. The group was constituted in Berlin at the end of November 1925 . The aim of the group was to provide mutual support in artistic projects and in the fight against the increasingly repressive cultural laws of the Weimar Republic .

Members of the group were:

The initiator and head of the group was Rudolf Leonhard . During its existence, 17 meetings of the group are occupied. The group went public three times, namely with

  • the announcement of its establishment,
  • a protest against the seizure of Johannes R. Becher's novel Levisite or The Only Just War , and with
  • a protest against the composition of the German delegation at the international PEN meeting in Berlin in 1926.

The originally intended establishment of a magazine failed due to a lack of contributions from the members, and as a loose association, the group was also unsuitable as a basis for political actions. From the end of 1926 the group's meetings (now chaired by Döblin) were more of a friendly and private character.

After Rudolf Leonhard left in January 1927, the group no longer seems to have gathered.

From 1933, the rule of National Socialism forced 32 of the 39 members to emigrate .

In addition to Georg Grosz, the artists Otto Dix and Rudolf Schlichter are also included in the circle of the group in 1925.

That Roth was invited several times by Döblin to join, but that this was always postponed. According to Petersen (1981), Roth appears to be the signatory of the founding deed and the protest notes, but did not take part in the meetings.
