Lauria is a southern Italian municipality ( comune ) with 12,393 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Potenza in Basilicata . The municipality borders on the Calabrian province of Cosenza . It is historically the largest city in southwest Lucania . It is a picturesque medieval town, typically Mediterranean. Lauria's most famous figure is the legendary Roger de Lauria , an extraordinary medieval admiral who died in Valencia and to whom many streets in Spain are dedicated, including Valencia and Barcelona .

history

The place was probably founded in the 10th century near the sanctuary of the Madonna dell'Armo. The fortress of the place was built by the Saracens . In the 12th century Lauria was the seat of a Norman liege named Gibel von Lauria and his son Richard von Lauria.

In 1806 the city was destroyed by French soldiers from General André Masséna and the inhabitants killed because they had supported the Bourbons .

Lauria is on Strada Statale 19 . The A2 autostrada runs through the municipality from Salerno to Reggio di Calabria . There has been no connection to the rail network since 1978. In the past, the station was served by trains on the Lagonegro – Spezzano Albanese line.
