Marsico Nuovo is an Italian municipality ( comune ) with 4048 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Potenza in Basilicata .

Location and dates

Marsico Nuovo is 46 km south of Potenza in the Agri Valley . The districts are Pergola, Galaino, Camporeale and Calabritto. The neighboring municipalities are Abriola , Brienza , Calvello , Marsicovetere , Padula ( SA ), Paterno , Sala Consilina (SA) and Sasso di Castalda .

The inhabitants live almost exclusively from agriculture, fruit and vegetables are grown.

history

The time of the origin of the place is unknown, but it is before the 12th century . There were settlers in the area as early as Roman times. In 1656 half of the population died of the plague. Parts of the city were destroyed by an earthquake in 1857.

Attractions

The church of San Gianuario has a Romanesque portal that is unusual for the area. The church originally dates from the 11th century. Another church worth seeing is the Church of San Michele Arcangelo. The structure of the church is similar to that of San Gianuario. The town's cathedral was built until 1121. The church, built in the 7th century, was badly damaged in a fire in 1809 and was rebuilt by 1833. Also worth seeing is the Palazzo arcivescovile.
