Paterno is a southern Italian municipality ( comune ) with 3224 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Potenza in Basilicata . The municipality is located about 29.5 kilometers southwest of Potenza am Agri and borders directly on the province of Salerno .

history

Until 1973 Paterno was a district of the neighboring municipality Marsico Nuovo . Paterno was probably created after the town of Grumentum was destroyed by the town's former residents. In 1857 the village was hit by a violent earthquake.
