Brindisi Montagna (also: Brindisi di Montagna) is a southern Italian municipality ( comune ) with 854 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Potenza in Basilicata .

Location and dates

The municipality is located about twelve kilometers east-southeast of Potenza , belongs to the Comunità Montana Alto Basento and borders directly on the province of Matera because of the Tricarico enclave . The Basento forms the northern and eastern municipal boundaries.

history

In the municipality of Brindisi Montagna there is evidence of traces of settlements from the 3rd century BC. Archaeological finds from the Copper Age to the Byzantine period (10th century) are in the Museo archeologico nazionale della Basilicata in Potenza.

In the Middle Ages , Basilian monks settled in the Badia Santa Maria dell'Acqua Calda (Mary of the Hot Water) . Little can be seen of the castle, which was built around 1200 on two rocky mounds.

In 1268 Charles I of Anjou transferred the fiefs of Brindisi and Anzi to Guidone de Forest. In 1277 Brindisi had 136 Fuochi (approx. 700 inhabitants). The last documentation about the Brindisi fiefdom goes back to the year 1320, when Brindisi counted 122 fuochi (approx. 600 people).

Via dei Crojesi

After the conquest of Kruja in 1478, the first Albanian refugees (Arbëresh) came to the area of Brindisi Montagna. Proof of this is the street naming of the municipality that dedicated Via dei Crojesi to these refugees. (See also: Settlement history of the Arbëresh (The fourth migration) )

In 1536, 30 refugee families from Koroni , led by the stratiot captain Lazzaro Mattes (or Lazaro Mathes), reached the now almost deserted area of Brindisi Montagna, where they settled on the slopes of the castle. The last names of the 30 Greek-Albanian families were: Barbati, Basta, Bellezza, Beccia, Bello, Bianco, Biluscio, Bodino, Bubbich, Buscicchio, Canadeo, Caparriello, Caporale, Colossi, Como, Creasi, Cresio, Greco, Lech, Licumati, Manes, Mattes, Molicchio, Musciacchio, Plescia, Prete, Pulmett, Rennisi, Scura and Truppa. (See also: Settlement History of the Arbëresh (The Fifth Migration) )

The history of Brindisi Montagna is tied to the events of the Brindisi feud until 1807 and then to the events of the French Revolution , the unification of Italy (1870) and the post-unity period .

traffic

Strada Statale 407 Basentana ( E 847 ) leads through the municipality from Potenza to Metaponto .

Brindisi Montagna today

Via dei Coronei

Brindisi Montagna is one of the more than 30 former Albanian centers that lost the use of the Albanian original language ( Gluha Arbëreshë ), the Greco-Byzantine rite , their customs and thus their historical and cultural Albanian heritage in various historical epochs and for various reasons to have. (See: Settlement areas of the Arbëresh in Italy )

On October 24, 2008, Brindisi Montagna entered into a parish partnership with Koroni.
