Viggiano is a southern Italian municipality ( comune ) with 3357 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Potenza in Basilicata . The municipality is located about 34 kilometers south-southeast of Potenza and is part of the Comunità Montana Alto Agri . The area is used by the Eni for oil production.

The south-western boundary of the municipality is Strada Statale 598 di Fondo Valle d'Agri . The Strada Statale 276 dell'Alto Agri , which leads directly through the village, crosses the SS 598 at Marsicovetere or Tramutola .

Community partnerships

Viggiano has a partnership with the municipalities of Połaniec in the Polish Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship , Vonitsa in western Greece and Étoile-sur-Rhône in the French Drôme department . For their part, these communities maintain partnerships with one another.

Personalities

  • Leonardo De Lorenzo (1875–1962), flautist, composer and university professor who emigrated to the USA was born in Viggiano.
  • Victor Salvi (1920–2015), American harp maker, received honorary citizenship from Viggiano in 2006.
