Barile (in Arbëresh , IPA : [ar'bəreʃ] : Barilli ) is an Italian municipality in the province of Potenza in Basilicata . Vines for the red wine Aglianico del Vulture are grown in Barile .

Location and dates

Barile is 44 km north of Potenza . 3060 residents live here. The neighboring communities are Ginestra , Melfi , Rapolla , Rionero in Vulture , Ripacandida and Venosa .

Seismic activity

According to the Italian classification for seismic activity , Barile was assigned to zone 1 (on a scale from 1 to 4). An earthquake was registered on August 14, 1851 with a magnitude of 6.33. The earthquake of July 23, 1930 with magnitude 6.7 destroyed most of the town.

history

The place was founded in the Middle Ages and was then called Barrelium . After the conquest of Kruja of the part of the Ottomans in 1478 fled many Albanian Christians ( Arbëresh ) into the Kingdom of Naples to escape the vengeance of the Ottomans and the Islamization and settled here and in other areas. There were further settlements of refugees from Koroni in 1534, from about 30 families "Coronei" (Italian name for the population of Koroni) from Melfi and 1647 from Mani . This made the place the largest Albanian community in the Vulture area .

The church of Madonna di Costantinopoli is worth seeing.
