The municipality is located about 10.5 kilometers east-northeast of Potenza , belongs to the Comunità Montana Alto Basento and borders directly on the enclave of Tricarico , province of Matera .

The area was settled by the Peuketeers in early antiquity until the Romans conquered the area.
