Vulture area
The Vulture area is located in the province of Potenza in the northwestern part of the Basilicata region (southern Italy ). The area is made up of the municipalities of Atella , Barile , Ginestra , Melfi , Rapolla , Ripacandida , Rionero in Vulture , Maschito , Venosa , Ruvo del Monte , Rapolla and San Fele . The landmark and namesake is the Monte Vulture (1326 m), visible from afar , a long-extinct volcano.
The soil, which is very fertile due to the volcanic ash, is not only rich in mineral water, but also allows the cultivation of high quality wine and olives. It is also home to Basilicata's most famous DOC wine, the Aglianico del Vulture . The most important sights include the Monte Vulture , the Abbey of San Michele and the Laghi di Monticchio (two maar lakes ) as well as the two castles of Frederick II of Hohenstaufen in Castel Lagopesole (a district of Avigliano ) and Melfi .
